Geographical Coverage : Belgaum district of Karnataka district.
MASS is a membership association of ex-‘devadasis’ of Belgaum district. Though dedication of ‘devadasis’ has been banned by law since 1982 in Karnataka, the tradition had continued to remain alive in the region because of socio-economic factors on the side of those who dedicate and a lack of enforcement of the law.
Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation (KSWDC) identified Devadasi women in Belgaum district and a special programme was taken up in 1989-90 to train ‘devadasis’ to enhance their skills and supported them with subsidized loans to take up income generation programmes.
Then the assistance of MYRADA was requested to help implement this programme. A senior staff member from MYRADA was deputed to the Government as ‘Project Officer, Devadasi Rehabilitation Project’, to open an Office in the area and work with the ‘devadasis’. With the involvement of MYRADA the focus of the programme expanded to implement not just the economic aspect but also a concerted effort to prevent more girls from being dedicated, and to organize the women already dedicated into an institutional framework that could protect their interests and build their self-esteem.
The Mission of MASS is “to end the devadasi system and all its associated rituals, and to empower women and children in difficult circumstances”. The long term objectives are the following:
- To ensure that all (ex) devadasis of Belgaum District are effectively organised in institutional frameworks, and MASS as an institution is strengthened to a level where it can independently promote the interests of its members and support other women and children in difficult circumstances.
- To ensure that the devadasi practices (dedication of young girls and their subsequent involvement in various demeaning rituals) are fully controlled in Belgaum District and the chances of their revival are greatly minimised. To also facilitate similar efforts in the devadasi-endemic areas of districts (in Karnataka) neighbouring Belgaum District. Back to Top
