Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI) are situated in the Bay of Bengal, mid way between peninsular India and Myanmar, spreading like broken necklace in the North-South direction.
These islands are located between 6°45” and 13°42 North latitudes and 92°12” and 93°57 East longitudes. It which stretches over 700 kms from North to South is aligned North South in the form of chain of islands between Cape Negaris (of Myanmar) in North and Ache Head in Sumatra (of Indonesia) in South, the former being situated 192 KMs from Northern tip of Andaman and later 144 KMs from Southern tip of Nicobar i.e. Indira Point. Situated in Bay of Bengal between 6 degree and 14 degree North Latitude and 92 degree and 94 degree East Longitude. These two groups of islands are separated by 10 degree Channel. There are 325 islands in Andaman group while Nicobar group has 24 islands. The total geographical area of Andaman Islands is 6408 sq. KMs and that of Nicobar Islands is 1841 sq. KMs.

Immediate relief seemed to have the high priority (i,e-91% ) for administration, UN and amongst all 68 aid agencies in post tsunami context. Most of these aid agencies had come to respond in post tsunami context and had low prior contextual understanding about the islands and its critical challenges.

- light house on East Island (uninhabited) was damaged by the earthquake and the tsunami
- Tremors from the main shock were experienced on Smit Island, Ross Island, Mayabunder, and Kalighat Bartang and at Port Blair, light shaking was experienced at Mayabunder and at Port Blair
- The strongest aftershock was recorded at 1.28 am on September 15 2002 and was centered in the Andaman Sea12.3 kms west of Saddle Peak (North Andaman Island),

Government Resources
A Union Territory Disaster Management Authority had been constituted in 2001 to manage the consequences of large scale disasters. The authority assessed the scale of disaster and monitors the rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations. However, the authority is also involved in call for of aid and defense assistance to manage adversity in conjunction with other government line department of India for information and assistance.The A & N Administration is also committed to follow the United Territory Disaster Management Act. Administration has also started initiatives with setting up State Disaster Management & Director of Disaster Management Secretariat as the nodal, wherein the notifications to be issued within 20 days (as reported on Nov16, 2006)The state control room set up at the secretariat has come up of significant value for vital communication and administration in islands need to create linkages with satellite agency for communication mechanism and update of the possible happenings and equip for improve coordination with other cluster information centres across islands. The entire mechanism will link to the all three Deputy Commissioners (DCs) as District nodal and through them all other line departments at the cluster level.
